Georges Starobinski is a musicologist and pianist. A literature graduate from the University of Geneva and a graduate of the Geneva and Munich High Schools of Music, he was successively head of singing at the Basel Theatre, and then assistant to Professor Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger in Geneva, before becoming full professor at the University of Lausanne. In this capacity, he also teaches at the College of Humanities of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne (HEMU), as well as at the University of Geneva. Since September 2013, he has been head of the Basel University of Music on the campus of the Musik Akademie. His publications focus on 19th and 20th century music, with a particular emphasis on the repertoire of lied and melody (Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Berg, Bartók, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Schoeck), which he also plays at the piano in concert. He is the author of a monograph on Berg (Peter Lang, 2000), edited Wolf's musical chronicles (Counterchamps, 2004) and Webern's writings (Counterchamps, 2008). He also published a series of studies on musical representations of childhood, a volume in the collection Sources for the Presses Universitaires de France devoted to Ramuz and Stravinsky (Noces et autres histoires russes, 2007), and numerous presentation texts for the Paris and Geneva operas.
