LA FENICE THEATRE ORCHESTRA
The history of La Fenice Theatre Orchestra is linked to that of the theatre itself, a production centre of paramount importance, which, during the nineteenth century, presented a number of premières
of fundamental operas in the history of melodrama (Semiramide, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Rigoletto, La Traviata).
In the second half of the last century, the commitment of orchestral ensembles concentrated on the internationalization of the repertoire, expanding also on the symphonic-concertistic front.
The podium of the Orchestra has seen famous conductors and composers following one another: Richard Wagner, Lorenzo Perosi, Giuseppe Martucci, Antonio Guarnieri, Richard Strauss, Pietro Mascagni, Giorgio Ghedini, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Goffredo Petrassi, Alfredo Casella, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Willy Ferrero, Leopold Stokowski, Fritz Reiner, Vittorio Gui, Tullio Serafin, Giuseppe Del Campo, Nino Sanzogno, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Carlo Zecchi, John Barbirolli, Herbert Albert, Bruno Walter, Franco Ferrara, Guido Cantelli, Thomas Schippers, and Dimitri Mitropoulos. In 1938 La Fenice Theatre became an autonomous institution: the Orchestra also saw a redevelopment and revival, thanks also to its active participation in the Festival of Contemporary Music at the Biennale of Art.
In the 1940s and 1950s, under the direction of Toscanini, Scherchen, Bernstein, Celibidache (committed to the integral Beethovenian symphonies), Konwitschny (for the integral of the Wagnerian Ring) and Stravinskij, the Venetian formation gave life to historic concerts. Over the years, the most famous orchestra conductors followed one another on the Venetian Theatre podium, including: Maderna, Delman, Karajan, Böhm, Abbado, Muti, Prêtre, Inbal, Ozawa.
The Orchestra has performed extensive cycles, including those dedicated to Berg and Mahler, under the direction of Maestros such as Sinopoli, Kakhidze and Masur, Barshai, Tate, Ahronovitch, Kitaenko, Inbal, Temirkanov, Bertini, Pesko, Prêtre, Santi, Semkov, Sinopoli, Thielemann Marriner, Maazel, Chailly, Chung. One of the most interesting and prestigious realities on the Italian scene, the La Fenice Theatre Orchestra regularly performs in Italy and abroad, receiving highly passionate acclaim from the public and critics.
